JANUARY

Jan 2 Sunday 7:30am, Huntington Beach: Veterans for Peace Ch 110: Arlington West Display @ 6th St and PCH, north of the Pier
Join VFP chapter 110 members to set-up a memorial to honor and bring awareness to the community of those who have died while serving the country in Iraq and Afghanistan and to bring awareness about continuing wars in the Middle East. The volunteers meet up at  the beach at (6th St. and PCH north of the pier) 7:30 and start the set-up of the field of crosses and other items. Depending upon number of helpers, this can take 45 minutes or up to two hours. "Many hands make for light and fast work". Take down goes much quicker than set-up and starts about 3:00PM and hopefully have everything back in the trailer before 4pm. It is vital to continue to remind the public of these ongoing conflicts and their costs to the nation and its families, and also to continue to talk to, support and help the many Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, Veterans, family members and concerned others that come by. If you have questions contact Jeff at jeff.mfso@earthlink.net or call/text  562-522-4241

Jan 6 Thursday 6-7pm, Long Beach: Long Beach Resister Sisters Candlelight Vigil @ Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse, 275 Magnolia Ave
A year after attack on US Capitol, Long Beach sends message: VOTERS DECIDE THE OUTCOME OF ELECTIONS. Join Long Beach Peace Network to mark one year since a faction of elected officials incited armed right-wing militants to attack the U.S. Capitol. One year later, the same faction is working to restrict the freedom to vote, attacking fair voting districts, and quietly preparing future attempts to sabotage free and fair elections. Register for event here: https://www.mobilize.us/democracyvigils/event/432989/ Americans across race, place, party, and background are holding candlelight vigils to say: In America, the voters decide the outcome of elections. To prevent this kind of attack from happening again, advocates are demanding that elected leaders pass urgent legislation including the Freedom to Vote Act, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and DC Statehood. This event in Long Beach is one of more than 150 events that will take place across the country, including at the U.S. Capitol.  VISUALS: Solemn candlelight vigil CONTACT: Jacqui Viale, vialegirl@gmail.com, 562-212-1852 and Kelly Lopes, kmchughlopes@gmail.com, 562-243-3223

Mandisa Thomas will discuss the decade-long work of Black Nonbelievers as an organization, how Black atheists face additional challenges, and explain what allies can do to improve their diversity efforts.   Mandisa Thomas, a native of New York City, is the founder and President of Black Nonbelievers, Inc. Although never formally indoctrinated into belief, Mandisa was heavily exposed to Christianity, Black Nationalism, and Islam. As a child she loved reading, and enjoyed various tales of Gods from different cultures, including Greek and Ghanaian. "Through reading these stories and being taught about other cultures at an early age, I quickly noticed that there were similarities and differences between those deities and the God of the Christian Bible. I couldn't help but wonder what made this God so special that he warrants such prevalence today." she recalls.   To register for the virtual meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/88669845323

But no one is prepared for the brutal murder that shakes their movement to its core and sends shock waves around the world. "Call Me Kuchu" is a 2012 American documentary film directed by Malika Zouhali-Worrall and Katherine Fairfax Wright. Jan 17 Monday 1:50-3:30pm, Online: Women For OC: Civil Rights History in OC
Presenter will be Alison Lehmann Edwards, Chief Executive Officer of OC Human Relations.  Join W4OC to celebrate Martin Luther King's Birthday and learn about OC's civil rights history.  For many, mention of the civil rights era conjures up images of the protests, sit-ins, and marches in the South.  However, the West also contributed to achievements of the era and Orange County is no exception. From the fight for desegregated schools to the fight for LGBT rights, Orange County has shared in the nation's civil rights tragedies and triumphs.  The look back will hopefully empower the group, as members of the Orange County family, to own this past and use it as a source of inspiration to continue the struggle to make this a county where ALL live free from violence and discrimination. Apr 16 Saturday 4pm, Online and Irvine: Americans United-OC Hybrid Meeting: Resisting the Religious Right's Efforts to Privatize Public Schools @ Irvine Ranch Water District Community Room, 15500 Sand Canyon Ave
Teri Sorey of “Supporters of Public Education” will speak on Resisting the Religious Right's Efforts to Privatize Public Schools. A firm believer that public schools are the cornerstone of democracy, preparing all children to follow their dreams, Teri was a public high school teacher of English in Irvine for 40+ years. During that time, she was the advisor of the first ever high school chapter of Amnesty International and an active member of Irvine Teachers Association, serving in various roles and retiring as President of ITA in July 2021. Since then, she has helped to create Supporters of Public Education—OC, to support and protect school board members who follow the laws regarding Covid safety, CHYA and ethnic studies curricula, and civil public discourse. A coordinated national campaign is underway to undermine public schools and replace them with a network of religious and/or money-driven schools, funded by taxpayer dollars. This effort is very much in evidence in OC where charter schools are approved by the current OC Board of Education majority even when the local districts and OC Department of Education have recommended the charters be denied because their plans are not viable. Some of these charters are using curriculum devised by Hillsdale College, an evangelical college in Michigan, whose curriculum is being used in many states to omit some of what is required instruction in CA for reproductive health, social/emotional learning, and ethnic studies. This presentation will provide information about what is happening in OC and what can be done to preserve public schools in their efforts to serve all students. You can attend this meeting either In-Person or by Zoom: In-Person - You MUST email mail@au-oc.org and request a place as the event is limited to 25 people in person. You will receive a confirmation response. *Proof of Vaccination AND Masks Required. The BEACoN Study assesses how memory changes are related to brain structure, function, and Alzheimer's pathology in older adults who are still cognitively healthy. Using this data Dr. Adams is investigating how activation and connectivity of the brain's memory system is related to memory performance in older adults. She also investigates how two defining pathologies of Alzheimer's disease contribute to memory decline. Dr. Adams received her PhD in neuroscience from UC Berkeley. Her dissertation research investigated the development of Alzheimer's pathology in older adults using neuroimaging techniques including positron emission tomography (PET). Dr. Adams received her BA in Psychology from UC Santa Barbara, where she first became interested in memory research and neuroimaging. Among her many awards and honors, Dr. Adams recently received the Postdoctoral National Research Service Award (September 2021 - ongoing) and the Young Investigator Travel Scholarship for Human Amyloid Imaging Conference (January 2020). New Mar 9 Saturday 9:30am-1:30pm, Santa Ana: 36th Annual Great American Write-In @ The Delhi Center, 505 E Central Ave.
As you know, the Great American Write-In is a free annual event offered to the public by Women For: Orange County to provide community members with the means to influence policy decisions by writing letters to their legislators. Every year, sixty or more different organizations and advocacy groups present information regarding some of today’s most vital issues, including education, health care, human and civil rights and the environment. Attendees visit participants' tables and then voice their opinions by generating letters and postcards to government and corporate decision-makers in the hopes of bringing about constructive change. At our last full-sized event in 2019, over 550 visitors sent more than 4250 pieces of mail!
We would like to know as soon as possible - but no later than January 19 - whether or not your organization will have a table at the 2024 Write-In. This year, we will have an early-bird booth registration fee of $65, which will increase to $80 after January 31. Keep in mind that early payment secures your location in the main ballroom; after we reach capacity (50), latecomers will be located either in the hallway, outside in the patio or in an adjoining classroom. We are limiting our booth total to 70 this year and we fill up quickly, so please register promptly by sending a check for the appropriate amount, payable to Women For: Orange County, to Felicity Figueroa at 36 Blazing Star, Irvine, CA 92604.
Please contact Felicity Figueroa (949-733-0850 or felicitynf@aol.com) if you have any questions.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Food Not Bombs Santa Ana will be taking a hiatus due to lack of interest by volunteers. We have had 4 volunteers holding this group together for about a year now, and we just don't have the energy to do it alone. Many call outs, parties and requests for meetings have not been able to hold us up. Please feel free to message us and if interest returns we may be able to pass the torch to a new group of volunteers.   So, we will not be serving until further notice. The core volunteers that are left in this over 10 year old chapter are very sad to have this happen, but we don't have the time we used to. We have served faithfully together for lots of Sundays and thank everyone who came out to help.

Help Irvine Housekeepers
Don’t Sign Hotel Corporations' Deceitful Petition!

Dear Friends,

On November 22nd, the Irvine City Council passed the Irvine Hotel Worker Protection ordinance that gives housekeepers protections from sexual assault and provides fair pay for heavy work. Instead of embracing this historic step forward for their employees, hotel corporations decided to circulate a petition which would block the housekeepers’ law. Some of their paid signature gatherers are falsely telling residents that this petition would BENEFIT workers!

Please DON’T sign the petition!

Brave women testified at Irvine City Council to the abuses they faced on the job, and the law provides critical protections such as mandatory panic buttons and premium pay for excessive workloads. When Irvine passed the housekeepers’ law, the city took a historic step to truly live up to its reputation as the safest city in the country. We cannot allow greedy corporations to take us backwards! Say no to the petition.

IF YOU WERE DECEIVED INTO SIGNING, PLEASE REVOKE YOUR SIGNATURE!
In order to revoke your signature:
Please print and sign the Revocation Form: https://www.unitehere11.org/wp-content/uploads/Irvine-Referendum-Petition-Signature-Withdrawal-Form-00420418xB613E.pdf
Then notify either UNITE HERE by email at alynch@unitehere11.org or Felicity Figueroa at felicitynf@aol.com so we can pick up your form and turn it in!

NOTE: While I stated that "all the judges are acceptable", I was referring to the ones for which there is a YES/NO vote. In the case of the race for Judge of the Superior Court Office #30, I absolutely recommend a vote for Michelle Bell. (I had included her race in the first part of my message, but some might not have seen it; for that reason I am sending this clarification, as this race is extremely important.)

Thanks again for reading my recommendations!

Hello, Friends --

Please disregard this email if you already know for whom you will be voting in the Nov. 8 general election; if you are still undecided, I offer you my humble suggestions. In either case, please remember that LOCAL RACES ARE EXCEEDINGLY IMPORTANT, so do vote all the way down the ticket.

Everyone will receive a Vote-By-Mail ballot beginning on Oct. 10; they do not require postage but must be POSTMARKED by Nov. 8 in order to be counted, so get them in promptly. They can also be dropped off in any of the over 100 Ballot Drop Boxes around the county or, from Oct. 29 – Nov. 8, at one of the 200 Vote Centers where you can also register to vote. (Last day to register to vote is October 24.) Finally, you can deliver your ballot directly to the offices of the OC Registrar of Voters at 1300 South Grand Ave., Santa Ana, 92705. For more information on any of these options, check the OC ROV website at http://www.ocvote.org/.

I've compiled a list with input from individuals I respect who are in the know; I've also consulted my favorite source: the conservative voter guides, the most inclusive of which can be found here: http://nancyspicks.com/vote-picks (my philosophy: let them do all the work and then vote the opposite way!). For most local races, I’ve only included those in which I either know the candidates or have had them recommended to me by reliable sources.

You can find my suggestions below. Please advise if you have information about any of these candidates and/or issues that might warrant a reevaluation or if you know of additional candidates who deserve support. If you desperately need an answer on a race that is not included here, let me know and I will try to get an informed opinion.

HAPPY VOTING!

We are deeply sorry to have to have to share the news that our dear friend, Marselle Sloane, died suddenly yesterday. Marselle devoted great energy to progressive causes, including peace, justice and universal health care. She volunteered her time and skills to DFA-OC, Military Families Speak Out, OC Peace Coalition, The Childs-pace Foundation Inc. and OC Progressive Events Calendar. She shared her home for planning meetings, special events and painting freeway overpass signs. She actively supported local progressive candidates and participated in local Democratic clubs. Most of all she shared her spirit and determination to make the world a more just and peaceful home for people and all living things. We do and will continue to miss her.
